When I shot this picture on the grass of the San Diego Natural History Museum yesterday, I knew I’d captured something special. I saw something magical happen and was lucky enough to get it on film. I captured a special love. A love like no other. Sister love.
There truly aren’t many things in life that make me as happy as when I see my girls smile. They are absolutely wonderful together, despite the fact they are 6 1/2 years apart. Some people might think having kids so spaced would pose a problem, but we’ve found it to be quite the contrary.
Now, don’t get me wrong, for us as parents, it has been very tough to “start all over” with a baby. I mean, we were just to a point where we could travel with ease, go out to dinner on a whim, ride ALL the rides at Disneyland and sleep in. Not to mention, our first was so easy and so independent [and still is], so yeah, all this demanding baby stuff gets tough sometimes.
But for PJ, a new baby was a complete and utter joy! Her life has new meaning. She’s a “Big Sister” now. She has a role that no one else in the family shares. She’s special. And she definitely takes her new role, very serious.
Surprisingly, PJ has never once showed any jealousy, envy or anger at her baby sister. And believe me, MJ can be a bit of a bugger. She’s not a hard baby, by any means, but she’s got a mind of her own and she’s not afraid to express her opinion. On anything!
Take earlier this week, for example. PJ is an avid reader and MJ wants nothing more to do than copy PJ. So as PJ is reading, MJ is trying to look just like her sister. But in the process of mimicing, she’s trying to turn pages that PJ is trying to read. Instead of giving up or getting angry, PJ just guides her along, finishing the book and looking so grown up. Almost makes me feel inadequate. Sometimes I wonder who’s the better Mom. She’s definitely the more patient of the two of us.
And then there’s music, or should I say the love of it. Something my girls completely share, even more than books. They dance, they sing, they dance some more and then they play piano. Well, PJ plays piano and MJ mimics [again]. But all of it is comedy, drama, romance and happiness, all rolled into one. For me and Ken, everyday is a new release and all the performances are worthy of Oscars.
