So here I go again. In search of an affordable hair product for BOTH of my daughters. The baby’s hair is now at it’s peak curl and both kids are needing product daily, so buying Mixed Chicks for two heads is becoming unaffordable. I love the product, but we’re looking a over $100 a month for hair! Really? That’s outrageous. I mean, that could go to their college tuition, a nice vacation or even pay for all their extra curricular sports and camp fees this summer. It’s just too much to spend.
I’ve done the usual, wasted money on some products that I thought would work, based on ingredients and my experience, but nothing is acceptable for the long term. Nutrogena deep conditioner is great, but does not detangle well. Christophe (a new line at CVS) has an excellent detangling shampoo, but the conditioner is hard to find and I’m thinking the line itself may not survive. Then there’s the L’oreal Sulfate Free line, which is ok, but getting as pricey as Mixed Chicks and Mixed Chicks is way, way better. So, where does that leave me?
On shampoos, I’m set. Between Cristophe, Mane n Tail and Creme of Nature, I think we’re covered. All three are great detangling shampoos and do not over dry. We only wash 1 to 2 times per week, so these products also last a long, long time. But it’s not the shampoo that’s the problem, it’s the detangling conditioners (during our non wash days) and the leave ins. I just can’t find anything that compares with Mixed Chicks.
Here are the two I’m thinking of trying next:
Silken Child and Beyond the Zone Noodle. They are both easy to get since Sally’s carries them and they are both affordable. The thing is, are either of them worth it?
PLEASE RESPOND WITH ALL YOUR REVIEWS and THOUGHTS on GOOD LEAVI-NS and DETANGLING CONDITIONERS.
By the way, my 8yr old is a 3c/4a and I’d say the baby is more a 3a/b. They both have a lot of hair, with 8yr old having super thick and baby being thinner. Both are super active and both get their hair trimmed every three months.
HELP! I am seriously all ears!

/ February 11, 2011I have tired the Organix line, and the regular conditioner works okay on my son, but my friend swears by the Organix Coconut Deep Conditioning Treatment for co-washes. I have yet to try it because I need to use up what I have first. I am using the Curly Q Dream Conditioner, and I love it but it is around $11 bucks on Amazon. I hope that helps. I have been reading that anything Coconut is the best way to go. I also use Organic Virgin Coconut Oil on his hair, and that works well too!! 🙂

/ February 16, 2011Hi I found you article from 2009 about good hair then decided to see what your blog is all about. I alos use mixed chicks (on my 3yr old son) and it is way pricey! Anyways my question is how do you tell what type of hair your kids have. ie 3c/4a? Is there a website or something that explains this? Thanks.

/ February 16, 2011I have a post that will tell you all about hair types and make it very easy to tell what your son’s type is. Click on this LINK. Cheers! PS. Silken Child is working, OK. Not in love, but better than most. I’m going to order some Mixed Chicks today and try Beyond the Zone as well. Still, even with price, I love Mixed Chicks. I just wish it were not only more affordable, but readily available.

/ March 26, 2011I am also a Mixed Chicks lover and yes, it is pricey. I recently tried Carol’s Daughter but found it just didn’t work like I hoped it would. I did however find a new detangling spray that works pretty amazing and you can buy it any CVS (probably other places too). It is called Silk Tangle Out and the brand is fx Wild Harvest Hair. It is described as a leave in conditioning and silk detangling spray. It is maybe $5-6. Would attach a picture of the bottle but I can’t attach here. If you email me I’ll gladly do so.

/ April 15, 2011I have very long, straight hair that is VERY tangle-prone and tends to be a bit on the dry side. In addition to using the Hydrate Vibrancy Conditioner in the shower, I also need to use Shielo’s Antioxidant leave in conditioner to even be able to comb through it. I have found this awesome Shielo Leave-in that you spray in while your hair is still damp/towel-dried and it makes it SO much easier to comb through with out tugging or pulling out your hair AND it leaves your hair shiny, nourished and fortified – I’ve noticed a lot less breakage and hair loss since using this product.
Has a very light refreshing scent and I have tried many different kinds of leave-in conditioners. This is a definite must have if you are growing out your hair or if you already have longer hair.

/ May 2, 2011I have to say, I did NOT like Silk Tangle out at all. Maybe my daughter’s hair is just too thick. I’m not sure, but it was like spraying water and did not detangle at all. 🙁 But, I have been using TREsemme for curls (and the low sulfate conditioning shampoo) and it’s is the BEST detangler for the money, EVER!
As for leave in, I’m still stuck on Mixed Chicks. I think I’ll just suck it up for now. Any leave in suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Especially those that are affordable and easy to purchase locally.
PS. Still haven’t used Shielo’s Antioxidant, but will soon as my mixed chicks is almost out. Will update with review. Fingers are crossed. Thanks Mariamen for the suggestion.

/ August 25, 2011i just tried mixed chicks on my girls’ hair, i liked it but there wasn’t enough shine for me. I love the shine just for me gives. also my nephew just used twisted sista and it made his hair beautiful. so for me I like Mixed chicks to detangle and knock down frizz, just for me , twisted sista, and for extra shine a product callled shine ( or a spray sheen if I don’t) have anything else. I know it seems like a lot of products, but they all are pretty good.
