One Mom's journey to raise empowered mixed-race children

A hot mess? Are you kidding me?

Allison Samuels may want to check herself!  You see, she’s a Newsweek Journalist and recently wrote an article about how bad Zahara Jolie-Pitt’s hair looks.  Not saying that Zahara’s hair is perfect or even what one might consider “well kept”, but it looks fine to me.  And believe you me, I’m pretty darned hardcore about white folks properly caring for their adoptive kids head.

Anyway, in this article, Ms. Samuels, whom is black, thinks Angelina Jolie is doing Zahara a complete disservice as a parent and caregiver by allowing her hair to be kept in a natural state and carefree.  And as Ms. Samuels puts it, basically: a “hot mess.’’

Say what?  A hot mess?  OK.  First, when I see a child who is 4 years old, I expect to see some mess.  If I don’t, I wonder how much fun that child is having.  Not that I don’t agree with Ms. Samuels to a degree.  One must have some pride in their looks and the appearance of their children, but this baby’s hair looks very nicely done and very healthy.  Am I missing something?

Irregardless, this article is bad in its core and depth.  The whole premise is wrong and silly.  Why?  Because the whole idea, the whole concept is based on the fact that Zahara has “bad” hair.  To which I say, SHE DOES NOT!

You be the judge, because I don’t see it.  I see a little girl, who’s 4 years old with curly, kinky, beautiful, natural hair.  I see a little black girl that should not yet care about hot combs, flat irons, relaxing perms or even hours of tight braiding.  One day she may, but for now, she’s beautiful just the way she is and deserves to be a child, free from societal pressures.

Oh, and as far as Zahara looking back at her childhood pictures and being upset at how, in Ms. Samuels’ words, terrible she looked….well….I look back and wonder why my Mom never trimmed my bangs.  She was a hair stylist, for crying out loud.  Not like she didn’t know how to do it, right?  But then I realize, I didn’t give a rats ass and probably would have fought her all the way to the chair.  You see, I was too busy having fun, being a kid, playing with my friends and kicking a soccer ball all over the neighborhood.

I wouldn’t trade properly trimmed hair and pretty pictures for a fun childhood anyday.  And I’m sure Zahara will feel the same.
