One Mom's journey to raise empowered mixed-race children

Unconditional love is so hard to come by.

My Momz arrived today!  She’s here to celebrate MJ’s first birthday, this Saturday, and also to have a little fun, as we know how to partay!!!!  Since babies really don’t care about 1st birthdays, we figured we’d combine her birthday party with our housewarming and go for the gusto!

But seriously, beyond having her here for the party, it’s so cool to just spend time with her.  I loved taking a walk with her today and just chatting while I pushed MJ.  I don’t get that usually.  During the day, it’s just me and the baby.  MJ’s not much for conversation just yet.  This is the “watch and laugh” age, not the “I’m so funny [sometimes], but at least I can tell you about my day, stage [PJ is here and I love 7 yrs old].  But, even more than our conversations, I loved having Momz here to be as devoted to my kids as I am.  I mean she loves them so much and they know this, especially PJ.  Unconditional love is so hard to come by.

pj and grandmaAnyway, after I picked PJ up from school, Grandma decided to take PJ to see “Up”.  I drove them to the theater, ushered them out of the car [I’m always running late] and made sure they had lots of snacks.  They went in, hand in hand, with their little secret goodie stash and watched the movie, in 3D even!  Very cool.  A memory no body else can ever recreate.  A moment in time that lives for only two people, PJ and Grandma.

Well, the rest of the week, Momz will be busy, and I hope I’m not being abusive.  But Grandma will help with preparation of the party, take care of MJ [while I frantically clean the house and get supplies together] and, most importantly, make [and show me how to make] tamales.  You see, I can make tortillas from scratch, I can make bunuelos , I can make biscochitos and even pozole, but I can’t make tamales, yet!

This Friday, that will change.  My Momz makes the best tamales this side of the Rio Grande and I’m about to carry on a tradition.  I may not speak Spanish, but I can cook my ass off and so can Momz!  Thanks Tillie!

Oh…and let’s not forget…there will be some very happy panzas on Saturday!
